village, town, city, or mixed?
what place are you more used to? what matches your life pace more? where do you wish to live? (realistically or not). ...and everything else you wish to share about this topic!
hello to fellow villagers and townfolk! :wavegreen: european village kid here.
lived half of my life (and most of my childhood) in the village, near small historical town (colonized, but at least some history left).
i feel at ease in the fields and forests, at the village roads. i used to soothe myself well with all of it. climbing up the trees, cyclings on the bike kilometers (miles) one way or the other - in familiar places or far far into the less explored. :yellow_bouncey:
we've had many Romani neighbors, and it taught me how important is the connection with one's roots and culture. it helps me immensely with my own reconnection now! (not Romani, but still). we were growing vegetables, and they were keeping farm animals, so we exchanged often.
i knew many (if not all!) village kids, and our adult neighbors always watched over us. we'd greeted each other if we'd stumble upon on the sidewalk, always.
even though i had a traumatic childhood (other reasons), i'm grateful for this particular village experience. nature helped me to survive, really. i had some air to breathe, some place to feel safe and free. i'd end badly without it for sure.
small (historical) town felt good too. i knew many corners of it, all the green parts of it (there are plenty of them!). i'd even walk it around from one end to the other sometimes (for 5-6 hours on the slow pace). quiet historical parts of it were comfortable to walk for hours without getting bored.
i moved to the big city (due to many reasons outside of my control), and i feel like i'm slowly dying here. there are the river, park and a small forest-like patch of land nearby, but... it feels artificial. :yellow_dead:
people are everywhere. stores and businesses are everywhere. cars are everywhere (thank gods part of the traffic is lighter because of the buses, trams and metro). noises, eyes, faces, asphalt, dust, artificial lights.
only after moving i realized how much i dislike the cities. ...not even dislike, i hate them. this pace is so overwhelming.
i hope one day i will move back. not to my village - it's barely possible, but somewhere else. i miss it all so much. :blue_sad:
P.S. will probably make a post for my website out of it lolz.

Oh gosh, I absolutely LOVED 4.0-4.4, Had a buncha tablets with that back in the day, And now my phone is entirely themed to 4.X.
You're right, Peakest UI ever. It felt so nice 'n snappy while looking amazing to, I may be a bit biased tho.

I (designer) and Maelstrom (developer) are working on a program that is intended to replace the Windows shell with a custom theme as shown below:

We plan to theme the taskbar, start menu, context menus, and notifications. At this time we do not plan the window buttons or programs such as file explorer.
Help wanted : Due to the effort needed, I am asking for devs that know Windows API, C/C++, and Qt/QtQuick/QML. Let me know if you can help, and I will DM you the contact info.

i used to use Premiere on my XP, then i turned to ShotCut on my old MacBook.
now i use Final Cut Pro, it's powerful on my new Mac - 1 Been thanked

Don't know how mainstream it is, but my go-to for VMs is always the Petz series. Yeah, I know I can run the games on my modern computer just fine. But it's still fun to have them around on older operating systems - 1 Been thanked

Now before you all try to disprove me by whipping out release dates, reminder that Teto Territory's main melody is very similar to that of Cirno's theme, Beloved Tomboyish Daughter. hi hello.
i'm sunner, sometimes venula, and i've grown fond of the frutiger aero aesthetics since two years ago. i thought now would be a good time to join the forums, as well as try forums out in general, since i never really used them throughout all my years on the web.
i like making music, it's something i've been in and out of but just october 2024 did i decide to finally pick it back up definitely, and i think it's been a good time.
i mostly enjoy playing roblox in my free time, i even made music for a roblox game, REGRETEVATOR, which you can check out here .

If you're a Warriors type of person, then you should also get into Wings of Fire. Loved it as a kid, still kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Just last year I read through the third series; probably my favorite out of all of them tbh

Sun Jul 20, 2025 8:53 pm My journey with my first home server Sun Jul 20, 2025 8:53 pm My journey with my first home serverOh hey hiA while ago i heard about this thing some people do where they create their own personal server, either because they can find a use for something like that or just because they want to have fun experimenting with stuff, and i found myself in a position in between; while i had in mind just doing it to do some silly stuff like hosting servers for games and such, i then realized i could use it for something a bit more usefulIf the fact that i'm talking about home servers wasn't enough of a clue, i am a nerd that, when possible, tries to avoid the more convenient solution and instead go for the one that grants me either more control for me, or less control for the service i'm using, and one of the ways that shines the most is through how i listen to musicFor the longest time the way i listened to music consisted on me sailing the seven seas looking for flacs of albums i liked, getting them into my preferred player (Foobar 2000), and if i really liked it, i'd use Local Send to copy it to my phone, which was kind of a pain; so the idea of having a central place that both my computer and my phone can access with the exact same music seemed interestingSo, i got a cheapo mini pc, installed ubuntu server, and went straight into CasaOS, a web UI that allows you to manage your server in a more friendly manner than the cold, cold terminalThe first day with it was an absolute mess, nothing was working, everything was restarting out of nowhere, and i accidentally left my whole house without internet trying to set up a static IP address, whoops
The thing that bugged me the most however was the most was Navidrome, the service for synchronizing music between devices and what got me interested with this project, i couldn't see a way to implement Last.fm scrobbling, something that i feel is kinda essential, since i like to keep track on the songs i listen toHowever, after sleeping and deciding to tinker with it a bit more, i discovered that the reason for that was because it was a docker container, i was trying to do it the manual way (creating a config file with the API keys), but i just needed to enter the setting page CasaOS offers and i was able to put everything i needed in thereHow something as simple as this took me an entire day to figure out i think is proof that i should stay away from important computersBut yeah!, i've been hacking away at it, got compatible players on both my phone and pc (For anyone interested, my recommendations are Aonsoku for windows and Substreamer for android), and i'm thinking of seeing if i could get a static IP address to host servers for my friend group, like a mumble server or something like thatIf you decide to venture into this, do know that it will take time, effort, a lot of patience, and plunging yourself into something completely unknown, where stuff might happen to you that didn't ever happen to anyone else; but, if you persist and come to terms that on your first attempt you might need to start from 0 a few times, i highly recommend this, it's been wonderful working this thing out - 1 Been thanked
