So this is something I've been thinking about for a while is how nostalgia seems to weaponized online. For a lot of us, perhaps with some rose tinted glasses, have positive memories with older tech, and the old web and I think there are things we can learn from it (aka, offline as an option, RSS, open communication and information). But while I was still on twitter I noticed this weird trend of "This is what they took from us" as they show a (usually ai slop image) of a messy room with a CRT on turned to Video that echos the same "Retvrn" vibe that just rubs me the wrong way.

So I guess my question is do you ever get worried about slipping into that mentality?

I like to think I'm not like that, but I get worried sometimes when I get a little wistful about ps1/2 graphics.

Hey guys, this is my first time using this app. I'm not really sure what to post, but I would like to share some kind words. I hope all of you are winning the battles that we don't see. I hope that whatever you're struggling with, whatever pain or problems you have to deal with, that you are powering through and making it. I was thinking of making a topic with the same title because I've also been wondering where y'all came from.

I still can't wrap my mind around so many people joining this forum when I thought it would have max 10 inactive people when I first launched it. Heck I don't know why I got so many visitors to my website either, I'm not saying that to brag about it but it has a LOT of visitors for what started as a simple Neocities website.

All this to say it's a weird feeling when so many people notice something you created and it has overwhelmed me a few times that I considered deleting it all because emotionally I don't deal well with big responsibilities (like managing a community), but thankfully everyone has been very nice so it wasn't as big a burden as managing a discord server for example where people are constantly being toxic or creeps. I hope that if it grows larger that more people will apply as moderators because it might be hard to manage someday.

But yeah my idea for creating this forum is that I thought my target audience would appreciate it, since forums are a nostalgic thing for many, and something that a lot of people don't know is still around and available if you look for it. Maybe it's not the best designed forum in the world compared to some others but it's something and I'm hoping to bring more people especially younger ones back to more simple forms of online social spaces such as this forum instead of Reddit, Discord and Twitter.

Made some visual changes to the Longhorn theme, trying to make it look more realistic / skeuomorphic, I also changed the glass to look more like Windows Aero glass.

Also added patterns (with CSS, not images) to post backgrounds as it was suggested to me.

(rant be warned) my distaste goes far beyond hatred. ai was promised to be a wonder for the medical field, it would recognize cancer cells etc etc, for now it's just been a waste of time.
ai is doomed to eat itself and become worse the longer it exists because it will start to train itself off its own data.
right now ai to my knowledge is being used for almost nothing actually useful and is just taking jobs that people need. not to mention with the current hardware shortage it's doomed to cause tons and tons of ewaste every year all while making life for you me and everyone else way more expensive, not to mention rising electricity costs due to ai farms.
i hate ai and the people that push it down our throat, it infests literally every aspect of our lives, comments,content, our base os on every device we have unless you use linux, nothing is safe from ai it's infuriating.
the most obvious of this that most people recognize is art. the death of being able to browse any website and not just be BOMBARDED by ai trash at first it was a novel concept and within a week it got old within a month i got utterly sick of it now, 2 years later i am exhausted, exhausted of all computer hardware going up in price, exhausted of booting up my computer and seeing ai shit appear noone asked for, exhausted of checking my phone and seeing new ai features literally noone asked for, exhausted of seeing news articles about how ai has ruined people lives. I'm exhausted.

tldr ai blows and has done nothing but harm humanity with the only net positive being the rich assholes who's pockets are being lined while suffering none of the fallout like usual. and im sick of it

I would say as far back as 2013, this is when I started notice bad changes on the internet, starting with Google+ being forced on users of YouTube, then copyright started getting worse with automated Content ID claims. Compared to the AI-pocalpyse of today it's nothing but this is when it started the decline to me.
It truly became trash when AI started to become widely used and shorts form content and "for you" agorithms started being pushed on every platforms.

I haven't read through the whole thread yet but I wanted to add, god I want translucent housing on electronics please! Or hell color! I miss Neon Green cases for my desktop and laptops. Yes, I know the black, and silver, and the grey can look good (I do own a m2 macbookpro), But man I miss color in designs.

well, it's not exactly DS. but it's heavily inspired by DS and uses some of its instrumentation.

this song was made for a yume nikki fan game, late july midsummer . i've never done ambient like this before, so i'm glad this made it through. obviously, the song doesn't end where the file does since it loops ingame.

surprisingly, this song has helped me fall asleep sometimes. i put it on low volume, make it repeat and lay down.

thought it would be fun to replicate this kind of style. i'm really proud of how this came out.

i tried to use common tropes from these kinds of songs, like the supersaw synths and specially the chord progression. i hope this was a good attempt at nailing the genre. here's a crusty wallpaper to accompany the song too:

my opinion on the new internet is that it depends on where you look. the mainstream stuff sucks ass now & maybe some of them even always sucked: youtube, twitter, spotify, etc. but you can still find neat obscure sites and forums if you know where to look for them, like this forum or neocities or some peertube websites. that's not even counting old services like irc or xmpp. granted, i've seen AI seep into niche forums unfortunately. but even then there are places that don't allow AI generated content like this one. i think the reason things seem so dire now is because we forgot we have a choice and have become dependent on these services. it also doesn't help that we sometimes have jobs where we're expected to use these services because "that's what everyone else is doing." i remember a job training course telling me i should sign up for linkedin to get a job and how uncomfortable that made me.

I have rather mixed feelings about internet nowadays : at the same time internet is now more accessible for everyone, we can access easily to a lot of differents medias and ressources in differents languages, and the fact you can be able to be connected with people around the world is something spectacular ! But at the same time, even if in the idea, social medias seem to be a cool idea, I feel like it "ruined" a lot of our behavior in modern society and our relations with people and environment around us. AND now since few years, we got generative AI absolutely everywhere, now even fiding legitimate contents on internet without being AI-generated is complicated :yellow_dead: (and the numbers of jobs and environmental resources it ruined, man that's depressing)
Internet was an marvelous creation, but can it be still considered as it now ? Like a lot of things in humanity's history, humans generally tend to make all their creations worse at one point or another ahah

More simple, less subscription and paid extras. Everything came in full back then instead of in bits. Games released back then were final product and were polished crisp and clean unlike now where there are issues and bugs riddled across the game upon release and the acceptance to roll out game updates over time to fix the issues bit by bit. I just like the idea of pressing to turn on console or computer, and just navigate to what I want to do in minimal presses and clicks instead of now with multiple features and things I need to get through to get to where I need to be. :yellow_smile:

i agree, however there is only ONE thing i don’t miss about the old web at all (and pardon my french): the casual use of words like “cancer”, “autistic”, “retarded”, and racial slurs among users to describe things they don’t like. that language can stay languishing in the past where it belongs
