i think 'older brother core' is maybe a little too generic and wordy for the kind of vibe it wants to represent. if i named this aesthetic it would be called kylecore -- i remember maybe like 2016-2018 there were a few times i saw that kind of dude bro xbox 360 doritos archetype come up and that's what they called them, PLUS my older cousin is a kyle and he used to be like this (at least in my kid brain) when i was younger :yellow_biggrin:

also i just found a kylecore / olderbrothercore liquid mouse?? LMAO? it looks exactly like the skeuoss one

I'll start off with this phpBB website that presents the forum software to french speaking people, it features some reflections and transparency, but also subtle gradients so I would say it is post-morphism. It first featured this design around 2014 (Archive).

  • Thu Nov 06, 2025 9:11 pm Re: what’s something from the 2000s that you want to see again? Thu Nov 06, 2025 9:11 pm Re: what’s something from the 2000s that you want to see again?
Geez, where to start? Sorry about the novel. Anyway:

I miss video games being finished products without any stupid extra crap to sell afterwards that adds nothing to the game other than cosmetics(Thanks Bethesda).

I miss video games that didn't need day 1 patches or other types of heavy dev work on a just-released game.

I miss actual game expansion packs with substantial content instead of "battle passes" or whatever BS is currently floating around. Back in the day, there used to be a thing called an "Expansion Pack" for a game, and a good deal of the time the expansion pack was as rich as the base game itself. I know this isn't universally true, but it's very common.

I miss games that can't be simply broken permanently after sale on a whim due to centralized servers, especially games with single-player content.

I miss physical PC game orders with physical goodies. Back in the day you could go to a Gamestop and get free stuff if you pre-ordered and it didn't have to be the "Here's a car payment for a game with maybe 10 hours of content" edition. They were goofy little things, but some were seriously cool. I remember getting a lot of posters, keychains, stickers, and sometimes plushies. There were other things like figurines or music CDs but the one I really remember: a complete box set of the Unreal games series (Unreal to UT2004) when I pre-ordered UT3. I know games these days do provide older games in the series sometimes for free, but I think gaming lost something without those little "Thanks for pre-ordering" physical tchotchkes.

I miss cars & phones without GPS tracking that can be abused to make government surveillance of individuals trivial. Heck, any product that used to be useful that didn't use internet or gather user data. TVs, home theater receivers, game consoles, streaming devices, refrigerators, stoves, dish washers, clothes washing machines. Come on, man! I just want to keep my ice cream frozen, I don't need to be advertised to or monitored to do that.

I miss old stuff sold at auctions/yard sales/pawn shops being sold at a realistic price (video games, cast iron pans, stereo speakers, CRT TV/monitors, freakin' McDonald's happy meal toys). Like every stupid thing is being priced like some kind of investment and the trading/selling feels like playing the stock market. Yeah, we get it, you collect games. No, I'm not impressed you have a NIB copy of Chrono Trigger (which sold at $85 when it was released) and are now selling it at $250. Games are meant to be enjoyed, not gate-kept by "collectors" with more money than sense creating absurd niche markets. IMO if it weren't for emulation, a lot of the regular populace who didn't grow up with those games/consoles would miss out exploring them because of the arbitrary value placed on them. I've never even so much as seen a Sega CD in person, but emulation allowed me to discover great stuff like Popful Mail. FFS, they're GAMES; they're meant to be played. You know what else was seen as a huge investment back in the day? China sets. People would get super expensive/fancy sets of China at their weddings. It was rare you ate on them (if ever). Where are they now? They're worth so little you'd have a hard time giving them away, even in perfect condition.

I miss not having a cell phone being socially acceptable. Sure, you'd have a landline or a cell phone, but there was no expectation you'd be constantly checking it. In the employment world, it's made some sectors a nightmare. I've had jobs where you had 24/7 on-call and were expected to check your phone every hour on the hour until you went to bed, at which point you'd just have to hope your ringer was high enough that you'd hear a mail/text/call and wake up. Maybe a bad example because the employer sucked, but the phone's place in modern culture enabled that.

I miss the old feel of personal websites. I know Neocities is working on this, but it's not the same. Back in the day it wasn't that unusual to be asked if you had a website and what the URL was. It was kind of a cool way to meet someone in a forum or IRL and learn some details about the person through their website, kind of like what modern social media does, but without the aggressive telemetry and monetization. These days I've never even heard of a regular person asking "What's your website?"

This is kind of an oddball one, but bear with me: the laws of physics, particularly Moore's law. Back in the 90s/2000s, every now and then a game would come out that would just crush even the highest end hardware. Games were made to be demanding, but sure enough, a year or two later there was hardware that could run that stuff maxed out at buttery smooth framerates... or as UT2004 called it, the "HOLY ****" setting. The game announcer literally said that when you maxed out your graphics settings. Check it out: UT 2004 Settings.  Seems like these days the jumps in tech are so small that the games that run like crap still run like crap.

he didnt give any constructive criticism at all he was straight up being a moron

yeah. to shame people because it's not "easy" for them to self-host is just stupid. and i'm saying this as someone who thinks self-hosting is a good thing. i also didn't like how that guy undermined daniele's coding skills just because he was hosting on neocities and proboards. like HE MADE A VIDEO PLAYER WEBPAGE THAT LOOKS LIKE A TV! THAT IS SO COOL AND IMPRESSIVE! and you're gonna act like he isn't trying to learn about coding just because he isn't self-hosted on day 1.

i love Wikipedia. you (probably) love Wikipedia too.
use Wikipedia articles to describe yourself! :orange_biggrin:
    (your beliefs, traits, appearance, anything).

    Mixed-handedness
Cross-dominance , also known as mixed-handedness , hand confusion , or mixed dominance , is a motor skill manifestation in which a person favors one hand for some tasks and the other hand for others, or a hand and the contralateral leg.

    Freedom of Roam
The freedom to roam , or everyone's right , every person's right or everyman's right , is the general public's right to access certain public or privately owned land, lakes, and rivers for recreation and exercise. In Estonia, it is permitted to access natural and cultural landscapes on foot, by bicycle, ski, boat, or on horseback. In Sweden "allemansrätten" (lit. "the everyman's right") is a freedom granted by the Constitution of Sweden. In Finland, "jokaisenoikeus" in Finnish ("everyone's right") refers to the freedom to roam and related rights.

    Imaginary friend
Imaginary friend is a psychological and a social phenomenon where a friendship or other interpersonal relationship takes place in the imagination rather than physical reality. Although they may seem real to their creators, children usually understand that their imaginary friends are not real.

    Paracosm
A paracosm is a detailed imaginary world thought generally to originate in childhood. The creator of a paracosm has a complex and deeply felt relationship with this subjective universe, which may incorporate real-world or imaginary characters and conventions. Commonly having its own geography, history, and language, it is an experience that is often developed during childhood and continues over a long period of time, months or even years, as a sophisticated reality that can last into adulthood.

rave wrote:The fundamental issue isn't that you like how "Frutiger" Aero *looks*. Aesthetics are subjective. The problem is the disconnect between what you *claim* to want ("old internet") and what you actually *practice*.

The "old internet" was never about aesthetics. It was about *control*. You ran your own server. You chose your own software. You weren't dependent on platform ToS or algorithm changes. When someone says "I'm addicted to Discord" - that's not a technical problem, that's a *designed outcome*. Corporate platforms are engineered to be habit-forming.

IRC, XMPP, self-hosted forums, and RSS feeds all still work and Cyberix exists as proof. It's possible, but your willingness to actually break free depends on whether you actually want it or whether you just want the aesthetic comfort of "nostalgiacore" while staying plugged into the platforms that give you infinite dopamine hits.
"You've built a "retro forum" on Proboards AKA a corporate conglomerate akin to Reddit that could delete everything tomorrow."
I don't have the technical skills to create my own forum yet, I know nothing of back-end programming, so that was not an option for me. I will admit that Proboards kinda sucks but it does the job for what I need it to do at the moment. When I have the skills to make my own, I will, but for now, this'll do.

"You all organize on and use Discord - literal spyware."
Nice assumption, but no, we don't "organize on discord", 99% of people here I have never talked to on Discord. Besides, it's none of your business what people are using, it's not your problem.

"You run Windows 11 and call it "debloated" while actual alternatives exist."
Linux is great for servers but it's not a perfect alternative to Windows. There is many software that requires Windows and that don't have good open-source alternatives. Maybe good enough for you, but don't assume everyone has the same needs as you.

"This isn't trolling, either. I am pointing out that you're LARPing as internet historians while using the exact infrastructure and language that killed what you're mourning."
We're not larping as anything, this is a forum where we discuss old aesthetics and nostalgia, it's not as deep as you make it out to be.

"The "old internet" was never about aesthetics. It was about *control*. You ran your own server. You chose your own software. You weren't dependent on platform ToS or algorithm changes."
You seem to have this weird concept that everyone self-hosted their forums and websites in the old internet. That's just not true, go look at the millions of GeoCities websites that people made back in the day, these were not "self hosted" as you say, yet they're an integral part of the old web history. Frutiger Aero is more a late 2000s thing, it's Web 2.0, when the web already was more centralized but not quite as bad as today.
Plus, Frutiger Aero is not only about the old web, it also encompasses other things such as UI design, operating systems, video games, and more.

IRC, XMPP, self-hosted forums, and RSS feeds all still work and Cyberix exists as proof.
Sure they do, I haven't denied that? This is such a strawman argument it's unbelievable.

  • Wed Dec 17, 2025 4:03 am Re: The fear of Nostalgia Weaponization Wed Dec 17, 2025 4:03 am Re: The fear of Nostalgia Weaponization
As comforting as I find nostalgia for these old trends, I have to wonder how shallow for lack of a better word my nostalgia is, or if things have gotten so bad that a time I hated is now preferable. I think it's a bit of both. I know we shouldn't get "political" on this forum as per the rules and some of the things I had a problem with during the 2000s were political. So I'll keep this brief. Take the good with the bad. We shouldn't act like the past was inherently good, so much as things have gotten worse in some ways & better in others.

It's... fine. What gets in the way of it being a truly appealing aesthetic is the fact that you either go all the way with a 3D feel and zero colors, or else you give it color and make it flat again. If they could find a way to make it colorful without sacrificing the glassy look, I would be more on board with it.

ADDENDUM: If you look at the comparison below, you can see how it especially suffers in dark mode. I'll give Apple points for trying though, because it cannot be easy to make a dynamic skeuomorphic design:

I def want to add a nightcore theme and vectordelia but I think I'll take a break for a few days first so I can get the motivation again. I don't like working non-stop on the forum. Btw, the longhorn theme uses 1 CSS file (stylesheet.css), if you want to try making a theme or even fixing bugs on the current ones, I use the inspect tool a lot, and you can probably put your changes in a stylus theme. If it's good I can add it.

Hi my name is Nova! I also go by CielosPasteles, NovaGalaxium or PastelSkies (PastelSkies1047 on Minecraft and Xbox lol)

I LOVE Frutiger Aero, while I grew up with XP most of my teenage formative years was on Windows Vista so it holds a pretty special place in my heart. My mom was the only person in the house who has a laptop with Windows 7.

I am a 34 furry (cosmicat) who has been working hard to get into the personal site and old web scene, so revival projects of any kind basically make the child within me happy (kudos to CrossTalk for reviving MSN Messenger/WLM!!!). I'm also an artist who mostly likes to draw OCs and cool things that my brain formulates.
My favourite type of music is Punk Rock, JPop, Vocaloid and House, my favourite bands/musicians are Evanescence, Nightwish, My Chemical Romance, Santana and Linkin Park. There's a lot more but I could go on all day lmao

I also enjoy video games, my top are Minecraft, Phasmophobia, Terraria, Stray and Hollow Knight.

it’s kind of amazing how, of all new tech fads, AI is the one that nigh-universally causes ordinary, not-terminally-online people to groan. you just mention the words “AI” and their day is ruined. really speaks to how unwanted this tech is for the common folk

doesn’t help that i don’t even know what AI means anymore. it’s become a buzzword in silicon valley; a word you slap onto your product to make it seem cutting-edge and get that sweet investor cash. there’s nothing “AI powered” about a green screen in a video editor

Half-Life 2 is a game that I love playing on my XP desktop, Doom 3 would be good as well. If you're into racing games I recommend Need For Speed Most Wanted or Underground 2 and Colin McRae Rally 2.0.
Random game recommendations I have. Halo CE, Portal, Crysis (If your PC can run it xD), Bioshock, GTA VC, Command and Conquer, Resident Evil 4, and Insaniquarium.
