I just want to get this off of my chest because it has been annoying me for quite some time now.
I hate how addicted I have become to Discord, it has taken a lot of time out of my days and I'm always getting pinged or messaged by people who expect me to answer to them and if I do not answer, they will keep messaging me.
Also, the conversations on Discord always end up being nonsense, half of the time it's people posting memes / GIF, rage-baiting or trolling instead of having constructive, genuine conversations that are actually healthy. I've also been a moderator on the Frutiger Aero Discord server, so I had to deal with a lot of idiots and trolls, and generally I'm expected to take action when something bad happens.
I feel like places like IRC and internet chat rooms are way better to hang out in because usually people spam images and the rules are often better and encourage people to type in a way that is not "brain-rotted", aka in a more mature way. Forums like this one are also better because it's respectful of your time unlike Discord where you're constantly expected to answer. Of course your mileage may vary depending on how big your social circle / how many friends you actually have on Discord, I'm not saying it's always bad, but for my use it became bad and I'm sure it is bad for a lot of people who don't realize it.
Even as I type this now I have the urge to go there to see if anyone messaged me, which shows how much addicted I have been.
Anyways, sorry for the rant, I wonder if any of y'all have a similar experience or I'd like to hear your thoughts anyways if you have some.
I mean for me, the conversations on Discord I range from brainrot to actually thoughtful. It's a spectrum I guess. I will admit I am addicted to Discord. But I have it uninstalled from my phone so I use it less when I'm out. I probably won't leave Discord because I have close friends on there and would be sad to lose contact with them. So unless they move platforms, I'll probably stay. But it sucks having to rely on a crappy platform to contact people who care about. One server I'm in decided to move from one alternative to Discord to another after they developed conflicting opinions about the platform. I won't get into it too much. But not many people moved so far and I kinda miss some users. There's also the fact I saw an inappropriate meme while at a work party and it almost cost me my job. (I ended up quitting anyway due to stress and things constantly being taken out of context, but it still sucks.)
Let's say you need help with something, right? You go to its website, find the help page, and the only place to get help is Discord. No email, no forums, nothing. Just Discord. Okay, let's join the server, and try to find my problem⦠except no, Discord is not an indexed forum where you can simply find posts about your problem, you have to ask the server about your problem. Now, imagine being on the server and constantly answering the same question 5 times a day. A forum post would fix that. smh Forums don't even require signing up or joining in order to view posts! And you can find posts related to your problem!
2. Discord is not a forum site
Discord is live messaging, like Signal, Whatsapp, SMS, etc. You don't make a post and wait for a reply/quote, and you expect people to reply to you, mainly problems explained by @daniele63.
3. @daniele63's problems
4. Predatory behavior
Discord has worked (possibly with Roblox) to harm children, an example being taking down bots that ban evil people from Discord servers because they "violate user privacy" or smth like that!

Although Roblox is more known for this problem
Yep and they could do way more to ban servers which promote hateful speech and NSFW content or even illegal content which anyone can join, I haven't been on them but I heard some horror stories especially involving minors. And yeah as you said them banning bots that are actually helping is crazy and shows how out of touch they are or malicious I don't know which one it is tbh.

So about the brainrot discussion things, let me clarify that this is not all the time obviously, but on a public server where there's always new people joining at all times, you sometimes have a conversation and then some person starts rage baiting or saying insane stuff, or some members that like to troll do that. This is mostly a problem on public servers as I mentioned, if you're on a server with just your friends then it's no problem really, unless your friends are weird.
Also me being a moderator probably contributed heavily to me getting burnt-out by this app, which now looking back there are some things I should have done to prevent that:
Locking my DMs: A lot of people that I don't know came to me with their problems and expect me to solve them, and I don't mean server matters I mean like life problems, and because I have trouble saying no to people I always did what I could to help.
Not becoming moderator on a big server: As a mod you're always at the top of the user list and whenever you are online people will notice it and start talking to you or pinging you if there's a problem, and generally you're expected to be helping.
In real life I'm not a social person at all, I've always been introverted and I don't like receiving phone calls, me getting instant messages over somebody's issues is giving the same anxiety as a phone call would. But yeah, you could tell me to just close the app and use it in moderation, but my problem with it is that it's addictive but it also drains me at the same time so yeah. That's why I'm taking a break now and I'm still thinking about if I should ever come back.
I do feel you, as definitively good of a platform as it is, there's definitely a ton of downsides. I personally used to be pretty bad on it, but being forced to nuke my account and start anew really gave me a way to refresh things, do them better. I only really talk to people and communities I care to talk to and just kind of ignore people if I don't feel like responding (not really the best approach but what're they gonna do, complain to me?)
If it's that much of an addictive drain, I would really just cleanse your account in the sense of nuking old dms you don't care for and leaving servers that're overall bad for you, then take a break. Mine was about a year lol.

Yeah I think I'll take a break and leave servers and clean dms as you said, for now I didn't turn on Discord since yesterday and I don't feel like going back to it to do that just yet.
I used to have a problem with being too parasocial and overreliant on discord and people I had there. Kinda grew into a bunch of nasty habits I won't get into. Good thing I'm using it only to communicate with the people I can call friends now.

Yeah, I don't know obviously what to do in that situation. But I'm wishing you luck.
