Keep in mind that with home servers involves risks as well. Unless you plan keeping your servers private. Port forwarding exposes you to a lot of risks, and you should be very careful about that.

That said, if you keep your servers completely private, and don't port forward anything, you should be OK. In fact, try hosting a LAN game of any game like people did back in the day.

That's actually a really good idea. Lots of people think of hosting file servers/music servers/etc but a game server is something that's pretty harmless. It would even be good to expose to the internet. Game servers are fairly low risk as long as you don't store anything important on the server. I actually learned how to host servers by playing with the Killing Floor 2 server on Steam.

Unless Steam hosts it for you, game servers can be pretty risky to have to if you're port forwarding your house wifi. But if you take proper security measures, you should be ok. Frequently monitor network activity on your router.
