Keep in mind that with home servers involves risks as well. Unless you plan keeping your servers private. Port forwarding exposes you to a lot of risks, and you should be very careful about that.
That said, if you keep your servers completely private, and don't port forward anything, you should be OK. In fact, try hosting a LAN game of any game like people did back in the day.

That's actually a really good idea. Lots of people think of hosting file servers/music servers/etc but a game server is something that's pretty harmless. It would even be good to expose to the internet. Game servers are fairly low risk as long as you don't store anything important on the server. I actually learned how to host servers by playing with the Killing Floor 2 server on Steam.MetalJack98 wrote: Tue Dec 16, 2025 1:39 amKeep in mind that with home servers involves risks as well. Unless Steam hosts it for you, game servers can be pretty risky to have to if you're port forwarding your house wifi. But if you take proper security measures, you should be ok. Frequently monitor network activity on your router.Bumhug wrote: Wed Dec 17, 2025 6:06 amI actually learned how to host servers by playing with the Killing Floor 2 server on Steam.

Home servers for storage or to use it as a personal NAS? Sure, but I wouldn't go to the extent of actually opening its ports and allowing other people to connect it, there are many risk factors that come with it.
Feel free to PM me for any inquiries or any questions, I'll try to reply in due time.

One of those things that I want to learn about but need the time and knowledge to learn (namely reverse proxy stuff and vpns depending on yes cases).

he's mostly talking about home servers for personal usage and friends, since his main example was a media servernullification wrote: Sat Dec 20, 2025 9:19 pmHome servers for storage or to use it as a personal NAS?
