How does the rank system work?

It seems that every user has a number of stars that denotes their rank in the forum (one being a new member, six being admins), but the ones in between are labeled with various subtypes of Frutiger Aero. Mine, for example, is a two-star with the Frutiger Eco label, but another might have a two-star Helvetica Aqua Aero label. There are different labels for each star rank. How is this decided? Is it random?

I think regular users move up the ranks by posting more and more until you get to a certain point. But moderation already has their rank set as one of the higher ones.

even tho these new ones looks fresh and nice i still miss the old ones with stars and such despite being just that ig
but it's just a nitpick of mine, the ones is still pretty nice
