How to make 2000s techno music

Unread post by MetalJack98 »

Making techno music from the 2000s is actually REALLY easy. There are a few different types of techno though, so for this tutorial I'm gonna tell you how to make techno like the Sin and Punishment Star Successor and Unreal Tournament 2004 soundtracks.

So I've listened to VGM techno like these a LOT, and I've narrowed down the formula into a simple recipe. You need the following sound samples/insturments:
303 Acid Synth
Break Beats (Amen Break usually)
Electric Guitar (like the ones you use for Heavy Metal)
Pads (for atmosphere)

So first you're gonna get the Pads in order. Make it really ambient and a bit quite so that it's not really the main attraction.

Next, get a Break Beat and Amen Break pattern going. Its very consistent, but the rhythm can change up at anytime, called a break.

Finally, you make the main melody out of an Electric Guitar. You don't HAVE to go heavy metal with it, but you absolutely can. You could also make it a slow melody as well. Either way, this is where the actual melody kicks in and everything else is pretty much compliments and atmosphere.

Suggested music for inspiration:
Sin and Punishment Star Successor OST
Unreal Tournament 2004 OST
"What about the future?" - Jet Set Radio Future

I hope this seems interesting to you and I can't wait to hear what you guys make.

this is pretty neat advice, however, do you maybe have recommendations as to what specific gear we could use? like vsts, soundfonts and alike.

i could definitely write this down as is but i always struggled to find the perfect gear that i need. so i would really appreciate advice on this. thanks! :orange_biggrin:

Acid 303 bass synths are a must. You can play around with https://errozero.co.uk/acid-machine/ to get a feel of how it sounds. For breakbeats, you could just sample an amen break or make one yourself. Drum Machines might be your best bet for this. Electric Guitar, just anything that sounds like it would be heard in a heavy metal song. Make sure you put distortion and a bit of amplifier on that Electric guitar. For pads, usually you want ambient or noise pads, nothing melodic.

While I can't recommend anything in particular, these might help you get in the right direction. For the Acid synth, apart from the link provided above there's also the TD-3 by Behringer. https://www.behringer.com/product.html? ... e=0718-AAN It's like around a $100 price tag but in comparison to other 303 synths it's pretty darn cheap. This is if you want real physical hardware though, you could probably find some VSTs ore samples fur much cheaper or free. If you want I can send you some samples I have.
