about clippy movement...

Post by ee »

i don't have anything against putting clippy or anything you want as your pfp, but what i am concerned about is that big tech companies like google, meta, microsoft, and apple might not listen to us, or it would be just a gone trend after some months
what i'm saying here is that privacy in tech should be a rule in our daily lives, not use windows and scream "clippy says..." or "clippy would never..." at big tech
if you want privacy, use better and privacy-respecting alternatives like linux and librewolf/waterfox and proton (which i hate because of their subscription system)
TL;DR: i have NOTHING against using clippy as a protest against big tech, but you SHOULD take action and use privacy-respecting alternatives, that will force big tech to listen to us and change their policies

I don't think anyone expected big tech companies to listen to people because of their clippy pfp, to me it's always been about spreading awareness to the common people to the issues with those corpos so that they can boycott them / make petitions or lawsuits etc.
I switched to Librewolf yesterday (from Firefox). I'm not switching to Linux yet, because I'm used to Photoshop and I regularly play a game that has easy anti cheat so I'm stuck for now. I'm pretty familiar with it though, I tried a lot of distros before and I use SteamOS everyday on my Steam Deck.

I've already been using Librewolf and Waterfox. They're pretty cool.

I've also heard of people doing one-day boycotts of social media.

…

It does not work if a thousand or a million people do a one day boycott, as everyone else is still doing their thing on those social medias, and the "boycotters" just get back on and see what they missed the next day like nothing happens.

We need to keep boycotting, don't go back to doing the usual stuff, KEEP RESISTING!
Inform people in government positions on stuff these companies do, tell people online and offline about the horrible practices these companies do, and try and rely on them less and less, even pay them less!
Companies are not your friends! You can not trust companies!

Copy and paste this if you like, to spread the word!

btw if you do end up trying Linux, use Krita instead of GIMP. It has a better UX. Also since Krita's mascot is an anthropomorphic animal, you can add --nosplash as an argument to shorcuts if you feel uncomfortable with the splash screen.

It's even on Windows! (So you can try it before using Linux to see if it's good!)
(You need to add --nosplash after the quotation marks if you're modifying Windows shortcuts!)

like daniele said it's more to spread awareness. but i'm worried about people not taking other actions because i fear a lot of people have become complacent. that said, i have gradually taken more actions against big tech. at 1st it was just me experimenting with different browsers, adblockers, and providers for my personal email. now i have switched to linux mint, use third party frontends for my youtube subscriptions, and switched work emails. i guess it's important to remember that changing one's computer habits takes time. even now i'm still not completely free from big tech. i still watch stuff from proprietary streaming services & have to rely on job application sites to find work in my industry. i also use spotify occasionally, albeit with spicetify's adblock extension & along side other methods for listening to music (funkwhale, bandcamp, piracy, etc)

The whole Clippy movement is useless. Big corporations do not listen. And I will never use Linux

"big corporations do not listen" they'll be forced to if it hurts their wallets
the problem is coordinated boycotts are hard to do in this day and age where major companies are buying out each other all the time
that said, it can be done. look at what bds did to puma & starbucks
also even if you dont switch to linux, there are steps you can take to making your os behave more privately like going into settings or using specialized debloat software
admittedly you have to be careful with the debloat software but it can be done

For this movement to work it'd have to be more then just making posts online though, and there's not much larger-scale steps that can be taken

true i dont disagree with you there
fortunately i think louis rossman (the man who started it) is encouraging people to call their representatives about big tech
but i'm not sure how it's gonna pan out because the few times i tried that in regard to other movements, it didn't work out too well
