IRC is a lightweight chat protocol that is both private and secure, if you configure it properly. For our chatroom, we use Libera.chat, with the requirement to register a NickServ account to connect, this ensures your IP address is hidden.
How to join
Get a client
To get started, you need to download a client, or use a web client. There is a variety of them for you to choose from, but if you're starting out, I recommend Hexchat. If you want to use your web browser, there is KiwiIRC. For a list of clients, see this website.
Register and Login to NickServ
Once you are on your client, you need to connect to the Libera.chat network on this address: irc.libera.chat on port 6697.
Once you're there, type this command to choose a username: /nick YourNick.
To register with this username, type this command: /msg NickServ REGISTER YourPassword youremail@example.com.
You then need to confirm your email, check your junk folder if you didn't receive anything.
Now that you have an account, you can login by typing this: /msg NickServ IDENTIFY YourNick YourPassword.
You can also login automatically by putting your login credentials in your client's server settings.
Joining a channel
There is a multitude of IRC channels out there, on many networks (not just Libera.chat), I recommend that you explore those too. You can also make your own room on Libera.chat if you feel like it, check out their guide for instructions or ask in the #libera channel.
To join our channel, type: /join #frutiger-aero-archive.
