I bought my father a Chromebook because it's a locked down thing that can basically only browse the web, and it's the device I've had to provide the least amount of tech support for so far. I hope someday some solid alternatives pop up, since I don't really trust Google to keep providing support and to not bloat it up.

off topic but who the HELL spends more than $500 on a chromebook. i've seen chromebooks on sale in the 1k price range!!!
