As a general rule I think if anyone mentions playing Roblox, they are probably in middle school at the oldest. I really don't see a reason for adults to be on there. But the requiring of Face ID is another sign of an invasive privacy trend that's becoming sadly more common for websites in the 2020's. Even besides that, this is so easy to bypass by sending a fake photo.

I haven't played anything on Roblox in a bit but this is like. Beyond weird. I got notified about it recently when I visited the site but I did nothing about it cause I really can't care right now. I have no idea what direction they're trying to take this platform in anymore. exactly! these age verification systems don’t work because you can just lie. even i was guilty of that when i made my first facebook account back in middle school

they've been trying to turn it into some metaverse ai hellscape for a few years now.. some time ago they mentioned wanting to implement dating app features
all this plus the interview with the bazooka from the other day... those in charge of roblox really don't care at all about child safety

I think its going to roblox and its social atmosphere also its going to bring more kids to discord to preds and there will be no responsible adults to stop them. This is a horrible idea since there are way better solutions to moderation plus people can easily downgrade there age so its pretty much a dumb plan that will backfire on Roblox.

As someone who is both in university and plays Roblox quite frequently (partly for nostalgic reasons cough cough Piggy cough but also because there are very cool games on there like Block Tales, and this new The Forge game looks fun), on top of it being a tremendous privacy issue, I worry that may result in older players like me not being able to enjoy some games with others, mainly ones that have less than 100 concurrent players on average. Just earlier today I was playing Normal Elevator, which around the time I hopped on had maybe 60-70 players, and started chatting it up with everyone else in the server (which made it a heck of a lot more entertaining than it already was), with education levels ranging from 2nd year of uni to Year 5 (unsure if the player who said that is from the UK, so it may not necessarily mean 4th grade).

I also ended up chatting with players in a Piggy (currently has 8.6K players) server and co-ordinating roles so we could get a chapter's ending that's harder and lengthier than most, requiring puzzle-solving, distracting harmful NPCs, and the like. I'm also worried what that may do to roleplay games, despite the fact that Roblox have said you'll be matched up with people of similar age groups - and not to mention players who don't verify their ages won't be able to really do anything in those games.

As for faking it... yeah, that's been a thing since it got introduced. I ended up (very regrettably) verifying my age shortly after the feature came out in maybe 2022 so I'm not fully up to scratch with all the methods, but I've heard of using Bratz dolls, 3D models of elderly people, YouTube videos, the Death Stranding photo mode, and the age-old parent's ID and/or face trick that's been in use since the release of age verification on Roblox.

What are your opinions on the age checks? Are you doing them? For me, I don't think I will.

This is such a lazy way to protect kids. This isn't even for the kids. They're just trying to invade your privacy instead of actually fixing their moderation
