you could use escargot which is a modern msn/windows live messenger app, but it requires an outlook/hotmail account in order to work

It does not require an Outlook/Hotmail account in order to work, it's fully independent and they use their own database.

Also, do not use Escargot. CrossTalk? They're not open source, so I wouldn't use them either.

My mistake. Besides I don't know if this person cares about programs being open source or not which is why I mentioned it.
Edit: For an open source alternative, I found this thing called WLM Online.

That's a recreation, I assume the OP's looking for a way to use the old MSN software.

There are 2 services for this. Escargot, and CrossTalk. Escargot got caught up in some shady stuff allegedly though so not the best to use. CrossTalk is equally shady as well but it's more active I guess so take your pick.

finally answering this, if the old msn isn't possible to be used anymore. then a recreation would be nice if WLM online is useful and works then i would use it

i just kinda of wonder on how i could set it up :P
