one of my most hated horror tropes is the jumpscare that turns out to be nothing at all! like they make you think it's the killer and then it turns out to just be a friend checking up on them or something

This honestly, it makes the movie feel a whole lot cheaper, and then you are no longer immersed in the story.

Hard agree. Writing everything to be absurdly edgy and dark for no reason is LAME AS HELL, and I'd personally compare it to something an edgy teenager would do.
In some cases grimdark can be cool though.

i think most of them are made by edgy teenagers but idk i never saw a grimdark story ig,,, not that i remember

kinda builds tension for nothing honestly, kinda makes it not only cheap but boring to watch
i think if u do wanna go for something like dat, it shouldn't do that but instead focus on making the viewer scared of the slasher's presence making them scared of being attack at any moment and anywhere
showing them that there's no safe place
but that's what i would do if i was one doing an horror story/movie
