Also, check out Shotcut, it's a simple open source video editor.

Started with Kapwing in 2021, limited usage in 2022 due to enshitification, finally totally stopped in 2025.
Moved to RunwayML in 2022, stopped using in ~2024 due to how buggy it was and the genAI bs
Moved to Shotcut in 2024, stopped using in late 2025 due to bugginess (fighting with it to make a usable gif for 20 mins was the last straw)
Currently using Davinci Resolve.

Yeah. It's got unlimited layers, but the text effects aren't the best so I just make them in Keynote, export them transparently and put them on top of the video layer. It's also got lots of aspect ratio settings for like DVDs and YouTube and other stuff. And it arguably looks better (dark theme is the best)

NOPE IT IS NOT BETTER JESUS CHRIST WHY IS BASIC FUNCTIONALITY SO HARD

I switched to Videopad for now, if I don't like it I'll try Shotcut and Olive

Openshot is like using basic tools made with fiberglass handles, you won't like it.

That's my opinion.

sidenote but its kinda odd that the only really good foss softwares (Blender, Godot) are the ones that work with 3d, which would be assumed to be very difficult to get right.

As stated before, I used shotcut before I threw it out the window because the export functions were unintuitive, and it took me 20 minutes of fiddling around till i got a usable gif out of it. Inkscape isn't as popular but it's not bad.
