I do recommend watching NationSquid's video as he explains it pretty well.

I took a look at snap2object's blog and tried to track down the original talk by Elliot Jay Stocks. There's no video of the presentation, but I did find the slides he used.

And holy moly, it's crazy to see that his perspective on the design style is almost exactly what we say about minimalism today. Even down to complaining about beveled edges and websites being mindless copies of the same trend. It also amuses me to see that in satirizing the style, he ended up inadvertently making a guidebook on how to perfect it.
When people told me it was seen as "overly corporate," I had a hard time accepting it because the look on its own has a feeling of immersion. But when the market is so oversaturated with the same thing over and over again, I can see why it'd be tiring to a lot of people.

Not all doom and gloom though, as there was apparently a lot of praise for "centering" the design... something that I always thought was a given with design in general. Weird to think that it took a decade or so to finally nail that down. onextrapixel's input on it is oddly refreshing in the sense that it lays down the upsides right off the bat. Even if it could have been seen as dull, the look was considered organized at least, so it makes sense that businesses would want to follow the trend.
