Yeah...! I found this strange juxtaposition on Discord where you're either constantly bombarded by messages or being completely left out, feeling lonely despite being in so many servers. I can't quite place my finger on the direct cause of the problem but much like with huge public spaces, there is little room for conversations and so everything feels very spammy or thoughtless. There's barely a sense of community and it doesn't help that the majority of the userbase seems to barely care about comporting themselves in whatever place. I find this very unfortunate as I totally didn't get this sort of feeling whenever I used Teamspeak or whatever IRC chat I used to use back when I was a teenager. Then again, I suppose that discord became the most well known online chatting platform and when you have something as large as that, you're bound to only get the lowest common denominator.

That being said, It's pretty much the only easily available space to meet with people of similar interest. For me, it's the only space where I can talk to people beyond work or university and with the latter being close to nonexistent, I don't really know I would feel if the app suddenly shutdown. So with that in mind, I can totally understand the dependency towards it. This is where I believe that the solution lies into to finding an alternative platform for building and maintaining connections. While this is much more easier said than done, the resurface of forums is a great step in the right direction.

Beyond that, discord has pretty much been in a decline since obtaining mainstream popularity and with the company setting itself of to the highest bidder on the stock market, I doubt that these problems will be solved in the future to come. Funnily enough, just as I am writing this, I found out that Discord hired the former president of Activision-Blizzard as its new CEO....

It's not looking good on any fronts. :/

You're right, it's kind . Tho I would say, Discord will only slowly go once a better alternative will surface and a lot of people will go there. Kinda like a lot of software wich once were popular but got outshined by better onesĀ ;)

Was Skype ever that good? I remember liking the aesthetic as well as the call jingle but I didn't really interact much with it beyond using it to call relatives.

As for me, I've always made sure to keep my server count as low as possible on my main account. As of now I have 7 servers, and I don't think I ever had more than 15-20 servers.
Even then, it very much does get addicting, waiting for a new message only for it to be "oh that's cool" or something minor. I think that might happen on forums as well, but I haven't used them for long enough to determine much.

The only things holding me back from just ditching it entirely besides IRL friends are:

  • The SDG (Skeuomorphism Discussion Group), a server that no one else wants to maintain
  • one out of like three anime communities in the world that aren't perverted
  • and a server about collecting musical clocks (probably the most niche on the list)

I've even decided to split my Discord use into 2 accounts: one stays on my PC for "online" activity and the other stays on my phone for IRL friends.

I am not yet allowed to use Discord, but being kicked off the app by my parents was probably one of the best punishments they gave me

I almost don't use Discord anymore, I was very active on various communities for a lot of years, there are great things and communities, and we can meet amazing people, but after years on it, I mostly see Discord as a dramas magnet, and I was just super tired of it (and it was not good for my mental health and mood). It's been 3 months since I totally stopped using it, and I don't miss it lmao
Also, the app changed a lot during these last years, and a lot of things haven't changed for the better (like how they changed Nitro, added the side store with all the decorations etc)

yep, I hopped on it yesterday just to check something and there was already drama over something, I miss some people but overall I felt more productive these past days when I wasn't using it.
As for the Nitro thing, Discord is not very profitable as a platform so they are starting to try to find more ways to squeeze money out of people, one of them is the new Orbs system where you watch an ad or purchase a promoted game or complete some quest in order to earn a currency with which you can buy a few days of Nitro or some profile decoration.
